Matthew Small Gaynor received a BA in Art from Yale College in 1982, and an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University in 1988. Since that time he has divided his time between teaching —  in graphic design programs at the University of Kansas, California State San Bernadino, the University of Cincinnati and since 2000 at the University of Illinois at Chicago — and practice, through his design consultancy Emspace, where he has done work for such clients as Mercantile Stores, the Art Director's Club of Cincinnati, the parks department of the City of Chicago, and the DeepDish Theater Company among others. Prior to coming to UIC, Professor Gaynor was Creative Director for two years at F & W Publications, an Ohio based company which publishes titles such as I-D and HOW magazines, as well as several book imprints. As a faculty member of School of Art and Design in UIC's College of Architecture and the Arts Professor Gaynor has served on various School, College, and University Committees, served as Interim School Director, and Currently holds the position of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College. At the same time he has pursued his passion for portraiture, making images of actors, musicians, dancers, friends and strangers alike.
